Please join us for a launch screening of “Women on the Move” and Q&A about historic women’s extra-ordinary sportswear, the inventors who designed it and their struggles to resist and reframe conventional norms to lead socially engaged and physically active lives AND our experiences of trying it out today.
Women and girls have always been sporty and active but they’ve had to creatively and persistently work around barriers to their freedom of movement. Often this required clothing that did more than one thing.
The POP team unearthed hundreds of inventions for all kinds of sports and activities and reconstructed 50 years of them – from 1890 to 1940 – to explore some of the extra-ordinarily creative ways women have challenged the status quo to do what they loved (and forge paths for future generations).
POP, The Adventure Syndicate and Mòr Diversity teamed up to try out this collection of re-constructed convertible, reversible, multiple, and hidden sports and active wear in the Scottish hills.
Together we went running, jumping, hiking, flying, cycling, swimming, hunting, riding horses, catching trains and driving cars, climbing up and rolling down hills and otherwise put these amazing costumes through their paces.
And we made a short film about it.
Join us to see how these convertible costumes worked, how many sporting activities can be squeezed into one weekend, and how cold summers in Scotland can actually be.
You might be amazed and even inspired by some of these extra-ordinary stories.
And, you might be surprised by how many of the issues facing active women over a century ago still look remarkably (and depressingly) familiar today.
The Q&A panel includes:
Kat Jungnickel (POP), Lee Craigie, Alice Lemkes and Philippa Battye (The Adventure Syndicate), Aneela McKenna (Mòr Diversity) and Maciek Tomiczek (filmmaker).
The Adventure Syndicate are a not-for-profit organisation who use the inspiring stories of women adventuring by bike to encourage our audience to push their perceived limitations. We do this not by showing ourselves to be all knowing, powerful and impressive but by being open and honest about our own limitations, vulnerabilities, and failures too.
Mòr Diversity exists exclusively to provide equality, diversity and inclusivity support to organisations in the private, public and third sector in the UK and internationally. We aim to be responsive and flexible to our individual clients’ needs; our vision is to be a catalyst for change, to lead by example and support organisations to create inclusive cultures to enable everyone to reach their true potential.
We also thank Findra for keeping us warm (with excellent baselayers), Oxford Atelier production studio for expert film editing plus all the many individuals and organisations who generously lent us props, suggested locations, helped carry things or just conveniently looked away at the right time to help us make the film. Thankyou!
